Thursday’s Pacific Coast Athletic Conference game between Palomar College and Imperial Valley College softball teams was a reflection of the Arabs season... a long and hard one.
The Arabs fell to the Comets, 17-0, in the final home game of the season.
“We did good with some things and bad in other things but when you’re shorthanded it’s tough,” IVC manager Jill Lerno said. “It’s kinda tough not having the numbers but we are doing our best to try and finish the season.”
The Comets struck for six runs in the first inning.
Then Palomar had a big fourth inning busting out for nine runs to take a 15-0 lead.
Palomar would score two more runs in the top of the fifth inning and would later win 17-0 due to the mercy rule.
IVC sophomore Alex Tarin took the loss on the mound. Tarin didn’t do much pitching last year but do to the shortage of pitching she was thrust into the ace role this season.
“Alex is a gamer, she’ll do anything to help the team but it’s sad to have to put her on the mound all the time because she makes such an impact defensively for us,” Lerno said.
The Arabs have two games left on the season and although Lerno is happy with the progression she saw from her sophomores she still wishes there were more freshmen.
“Our sophomores showed real progression this year. They got a lot out of all the experience they had as freshmen,” Lerno said. “I just wished we had more freshmen that could have gotten that same experience but what can you do when you don’t have the numbers.”
