BRAWLEY — High school basketball fans will be able to hear local games on the radio and the Internet this season as KROP has announced it will be airing “Games of the Week” for the remainder of the season.
“We were told that KROP broadcast basketball back in the late ’70s and we’ve had success with this format in high school baseball last season,” said station owner Teresa Goodspeed. “This year we’ll start with league games and CIF and probably cover some preseason games next year.”
Goodspeed said the goal is to try to give all local teams coverage during the next few weeks and then focus on critical games as the league championship races in both the Desert and Imperial Valley leagues become clear.
The first broadcast game will air at 7 p.m. Thursday as Brawley Union High will host Cibola High of Yuma.
“We decided to stay close to home for the first game to make sure that the equipment and other logistics are ready to go,” Goodspeed said.
KROP plans to air two games a week with the first IVL contest featuring Central at Brawley on Jan. 20 and the first Desert League game slated to be Imperial at Calipatria on Jan. 24.
“We’re trying to draw a Valleywide audience and give our sponsors and our listeners the best games possible,” Goodspeed said. “We’ll also try to stay with local teams that go deep into the playoffs.”
Games will be aired on both KROP 1300 AM and on the Internet at krop.info which can be accessed by any Internet-capable device.
Goodspeed has tapped KROP’s Brawley football broadcast crew of Tom Ronco and Andy Burnett to cover the games. The veteran announcers will be joined by Andy Burnett Jr.
“It made sense because all three are former varsity basketball coaches so they bring both broadcast experience and basketball expertise to the broadcasts,” Goodspeed said.
