SAN DIEGO -- Officials released the emergency call from the distraught woman who found Junior Seau Wednesday shortly after he shot himself in the chest.
The woman, who police identified as Seau's girlfriend, was nearly hysterical as she tried to explain to an emergency operator what she found when she returned to Seau's house at about 9:15 a.m.
The first part of the call is unintelligible as the frantic woman tries to express herself.
"Ma'am … what's going on there?" the operator asks.
"My boyfriend just shot himself! I just came home from the gym," the woman responds. "Junior Seau, my boyfriend!"
As the caller slips into hysterics again, the operator tells her to take a deep breath.
"Do you know if he's breathing?" the operator asks.
"I don't think so," the caller replies.
"Where is the gun?" the operator asks.
"It's next to him in the bed," the caller says.
When the emergency operator asks where Seau shot himself, Megan says, "In the heart.''
After the grief-stricken woman asks what she should do, the dispatcher instructs her to move the former linebacker to the floor so she can perform CPR. The caller replies, "He weighs 260 pounds'' then says she'll try, and soon gets back on the line to say she's gotten him off the bed.
The dispatcher then puts a medic on the line to talk the girlfriend through resuscitation techniques. At that point, about 9:30 a.m., Megan is told emergency personnel have arrived at the beachfront home, and she can be heard going to the front door and letting them in.
On Thursday, the county Medical Examiner's Office ruled Seau's death a suicide by gunshot to the chest. He apparently left no note explaining his decision to end his life.
At about 9:30 a.m., just after the woman managed to get the body off the bed, the first emergency responders arrived. Their attempts to resuscitate the former Chargers linebacker were unsuccessful.
Thursday, the San Diego Medical Examiner ruled that Seau died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. On Friday, Oceanside police said that the gun he used was not registered to him and they were trying to determine who the owner was.
Public and private memorials in the Seau's longtime hometown of Oceanside are in the early stages of planning.
