13. 'Hobbit' rules again as Cruise, Apatow, Streisand post soft debuts

It was a ho-ho-ho-hum weekend at the box office, as five new releases failed to draw moviegoers to the multiplex in droves. "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" was the No. 1 film for the second consecutive weekend, collecting an additional $36.7...

  15. Reel Critics: Not a big 'Reach,' but fast-paced fun

Tom Cruise already has a successful action movie franchise in the "Mission: Impossible" films. But he makes a serious bid to start up a similar action series as "Jack Reacher," a hard-boiled operative in the mold of Jason Bourne. Jack lives off the...

  17. Review: 'Deadfall' runs hot and cold

Like the deer in the headlights that opens the thriller "Deadfall," this is a film about the tragic consequences of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Bad roads, bad weather, bad family dynamics are equally problematic. And when Olivia Wilde's...

  19. Directors discuss the work and play angles

In the costly and time-intensive discipline of animated filmmaking, every movie comes with high stakes. Five directors who recently came together for the first Envelope Animation Round Table discussed the artistic and business demands of the medium. In a conversation at the Los Angeles Times, Mark Andrews ("Brave," with Brenda Chapman), Chris Butler ("ParaNorman," with Sam Fell), Rich Moore ('Wreck-It Ralph"), Peter Ramsey ("Rise of the Guardians") and Genndy Tartakovsky ("Hotel Transylvania") tackled topics such as how they pitch their ideas, approach voice actors and handle the limitations that come from playing strictly to family audiences.

  21. Film review: 'Jack Reacher' thriller is a bit of a reach

For fans of Lee Child's series of Jack Reacher thrillers, the decision to cast Tom Cruise as Reacher must seem like ... well ... a reach. Child's protagonist is light-haired, nearly 6 and a half feet tall, burly enough to be instantly intimidating, and laconic — the very antithesis of star Cruise's on-screen image. The character seems a far better fit for Arnold Schwarzenegger; it's hard not to speculate that Child came up with the character back in the '90s with the specific hope of creating a new franchise for the governor-to-be.

  23. 'Jack Reacher' comes up short, movie critics say

When it comes to kicking butt, Tom Cruise is an old hand. He's done it as an ace pilot in "Top Gun," a soldier-turned-samurai in "The Last Samurai," a globe-trotting super-spy in the "Mission: Impossible" movies, a futuristic cop in "Minority Report" and a different globe-trotting super-spy in "Knight and Day."
