  5. From the Right: Can't ignore the 'fiscal cliff'

I had planned to write on local government this week to continue looking at the problem of unsustainable budgets. Alas, the farce played out last week in “saving” us from the federal “fiscal cliff” is too important to ignore. Our esteemed political class in Washington has supposedly prevented us from sliding into the abyss of economic collapse. A deal was reached. Hooray! There will be higher taxes on the nasty rich and more spending on those who are not. We can now all go along our merry way and ring in the New Year knowing that everything will be just swell.

Is there something in the water? That question was asked recently in this very paper.
Is there something in the water? That question was asked recently in this very paper. We thought the water was fine. I am not so sure now. I fear that our over-lords in Sacramento may be spiking the water with something like Kool-Aid. The silly season...

  15. From the Right: Time to look for Social Security solution

One of the great truisms of national politics is don’t mess with the Social Security system. For a long time now the political establishment has lied to itself and to us, refusing even to acknowledge that it has been broken from the very start. This past week we learned that the situation is worse than previously thought. The system as a whole will be insolvent by 2033. So much for your security! In little more than 20 years there will be nothing left. Of course that is only a partial truth because we have not actually been funding the program for decades. The moneys paid by all Americans into the program each year have been siphoned off into the general fund and replaced with an “I owe you.” You know, we will pay it back later. And later means much later which really means never. The deficit is into the trillions. Can it be saved? Sure, when we’re ready to make a reality check.
