1. Culinary SOS: Brunos budino al caramello

Dear SOS: We had dinner one night at Brunos Trattoria on Birch Street in downtown Brea. Although most of what we had was actually quite good, we fell in love at first bite with the budino al caramello (caramel pudding/chocolate ganache/whipped cream). Yes, it was so good that we would definitely be willing to go there just for that! Is there any way you could get that recipe?

  5. The California Cook: Citrus in salads, while you wait for tomatoes

The cook's year can be divided in two: tomato and not-tomato. But sometimes, even the best-intentioned, most locavore-crazy among us so crave a sweet, tart bite in our salads that we break down and grab one of those cottony out-of-season tennis balls. You've done it too. Don't try to deny it.

  9. Gourmet Vegetarian Fare At Six Main

The food at Six Main is outstanding. And it's made almost entirely from plants. The dishes themselves sound like simple, hearty fare: chowder, pasta, meatloaf, gelato. But some culinary alchemy transforms raw veggies into pasta and avocado into ice cream. There's no fish in the chowder, no meat in the meatloaf. You might not even notice what your food is missing unless you ask.

  11. In Portland, Ore., a garden of pastry delights

PORTLAND, Ore. — Is it possible for an Angeleno to leave home and find love in a region where sunshine is merely a rumor and 50 shades of gray are a daily atmospheric reality?
PORTLAND, Ore. — Is it possible for an Angeleno to leave home and find love in a region where sunshine is merely a rumor and 50 shades of gray are a daily atmospheric reality? It's helpful if the pursuit of that bliss involves a white-hot...

Forget the simple quiche, fruit salad and cheese Danish that once fueled home-cooked Sunday brunches. Nobody cooks anymore. Too few of us entertain. That's too bad, because I like nothing more than starting off the week with a Bloody Mary, good...

What's not to like about a restaurant that requires you to ride an elevator to a rooftop dining room? There we were, in the lobby of the Miami Culinary Institute in downtown Miami, where a charming woman corralled us into a car and set us on our way...

  17. Counter Intelligence: Sqirl sticks to the very basics

Isaiah Berlin, in his famous essay, once divided thinkers into two groups: hedgehogs, who know one big thing, and foxes, who know many things. Proust and Shakespeare. Separating writers into one camp or another has long been a sport of undergraduate humanities majors when the 2 a.m. pot of coffee starts to kick in.

  19. Deck the halls with vegetarian roasts!

When I was a diehard vegetarian a number of years ago, packaged meat alternatives were slim pickings at best. Sure, you could find the occasional veggie "burger" or "hot dog," but there was no comparison to the real thing. Burned enough times, I grew wary of anything masquerading as meat.
