  1. Who speaks for us in the House?

This fiscal cliff vote that happened on New Year’s Day — who the heck was representing the Imperial Valley? With Bob Filner gone, where was Juan Vargas? Didn’t he win the election to fill the seat? Can an entire district go without...

  3. From the Right: Can't ignore the 'fiscal cliff'

I had planned to write on local government this week to continue looking at the problem of unsustainable budgets. Alas, the farce played out last week in “saving” us from the federal “fiscal cliff” is too important to ignore. Our esteemed political class in Washington has supposedly prevented us from sliding into the abyss of economic collapse. A deal was reached. Hooray! There will be higher taxes on the nasty rich and more spending on those who are not. We can now all go along our merry way and ring in the New Year knowing that everything will be just swell.

  5. Vista Latina: Hispanic population continues to grow in Imperial County while other demographics decline

As a child, Juan Ulloa saw differences in how people thought of themselves based on their situations in life.

As a child, Juan Ulloa saw differences in how people thought of themselves based on their situations in life.    There was a difference between Mexican and Spanish, a class distinction based on power, economics and the color of your skin, he said....

  7. Vista Latina: Conservatism alive in many Latinos

There was a time when Calexico resident Daniel Ramirez blindly cast his vote along party lines. Currently, as someone who votes “principles over party,” he said he is not pleased with his voting options come November.

  9. Life Out Here: A post-racial flight

“Flight” is a fine movie, with a terrifying first third followed by a heart-breaking but ultimately life-affirming second two-thirds. Denzel Washington and British actress Kelly Reilly give breathtakingly real performances, and Don Cheadle is his usual intense self.

  11. Our View: Supermajority needs to be watched

For the first time in nearly 80 years, one party is in control of both houses of the California Legislature. Such an uncommon occurrence grants what amounts to absolute power on the Democrats in this state to raises taxes, override vetoes, bypass...

  13. INKED! Secession is empty rhetoric, treasonous talk

Americans have sent a clear message with these petitions of secession, which have now come from angry citizens from all 50 states.
Americans have sent a clear message with these petitions of secession, which have now come from angry citizens from all 50 states. That message? We’re sore losers and we want everyone to know it. A friend posed the idea that had Mitt Romney won...

  15. From the Right: Right was run right out of town

You don’t have to hit me over the head with a 2 by 4. OK, you’re right, you usually do. Consider myself bludgeoned. The election last week was nothing short of a good old-fashioned whipping. Both across the nation and in this once-great state of California, those with a D next to their name squashed their opponents like bugs. No spin can be spun. No excuses can be given. It is time for reality to set in and for those on the right to face the unavoidable truth. It is no longer right to be Right.

  17. INKED! Post-election hangover is a messy affair

The chaos, anger and, ultimately, the sadness so apparent in the afterglow of this election — presidential and otherwise — is far worse than anything that preceded it.

  21. From the Right: Political stalemate may be ending

Our country is deeply divided, split right down the middle on most every issue.
Our country is deeply divided, split right down the middle on most every issue. There is likely one point where Americans, Republicans, Democrats, and Independents can all agree on: All sides must come together to solve the issues facing our country....

  23. INKED! Obomney means the longest rain check ever

The entire miserable presidential election season could be summed up by CNN’s coverage of the first debate between Obomney.
The entire miserable presidential election season could be summed up by CNN’s coverage of the first debate between Obomney. Meh. In shades of yellow and green, four unremarkable years and the expectation of four more of the same were distilled by...
