“If you can read, remember to thank a teacher,” is a frequently heard saying.
“If you can read, remember to thank a teacher,” is a frequently heard saying. At the beginning of this new year I would like to thank some of the special people in my life, including those who taught me to read at Eastside School in rural...

  11. Viewpoint: Bibles are personal for many

Bibles are very personal for many people. Some, like my sister Louise, and my friend Ruth, favor the King James Version. Others like me, prefer the New King James. The late Mike Johnson, founder of Turning Point Ministries in Holtville, liked the New International Version. My friend Jean, likes using three versions: New Standard Revised, NIV and NKJ. There are so many versions that just about everyone can find one they are comfortable with.

  13. View from the pew: We are bees and the fountain needs cleaning

A few years ago I gave up trying to grow a lawn. The combination of my front yard’s alkali-ridden soil and my total lack of gardening expertise hastened the decision. My grandfather had what is known as a green thumb. He could grow roses on a brick....

  15. View from the pew: A lot stupid and a little wiser

OK, you sold all of your stuff and quit your job because you believed some old guy who said the world was ending. Not just ending eventually, in that “I kind of know, but I’m hedging my bets” way, but definitely, emphatically, no-way-it-...

  23. In Theory: Are parts of Scripture outdated and in need of change?

It's not often that a Christian minister agrees with the New Atheist movement, but the Rev. Michael Dowd believes it's possible when it comes to what he calls the "idolatry of the written word." A self-described "New Theist" — one who "value[s]...
