  5. Candid Candace: Lyric Gala's 'Midnight in Paris'

For the 29th annual Fantasy of the Opera Gala on Feb. 9, the Lyric's Guild Board transformed the Civic Opera House into 1920s Paris for this year's theme, "Midnight in Paris." More than 700 patrons in black-tie attire sipped Champagne among French-inspired sights that included a two-story twinkling Eiffel Tower, a Moulin Rouge nightclub, strolling mimes and cancan dancers.

  9. Jake Shimabukuro Performs at the Jorgensen in Storrs on Nov. 29

There's a Jake Shimabukuro of any instrument. You could say Jimi Hendrix was the Jake Shimabukuro of the electric guitar, or that Bonzo was Led Zep's resident Shimabukuro behind the skins. You wouldn't be way off the mark to suggest Winston Churchill was the Jake Shimabukuro of international diplomacy. FDR Shimabukuro-d the hell out of the Great Depression. Alas, there's only one JS of the ubiquitous ukelele, that diminutive stringed device usually heard strangled to near-death up by the register of Guitar Center. He does things you wouldn't believe. (Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" on the ukelele? C'mon, now.) Head to Storrs on Nov. 29, and hear a uke transformed into a symphony orchestra.

  11. The Jake Shimabukuro project

Halfway through Jake Shimabukuro's new album, "Grand Ukulele," Alan Parsons' uninflected monotone breaks in to paraphrase the immortal words of actor Christopher Walken: "My name is Alan Parsons. I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more ukulele. Got to have more ukulele."

  13. Freddie Mercury biopic moves forward; Sacha Baron Cohen to star

Queen guitarist Brian May has reignited talk of a long-gestating Freddie Mercury biopic when he confirmed a shooting schedule and Sacha Baron Cohen’s participation as Mercury. While that information sinks in, think of Cohen, best known for his star-turns as bumbling Kazakh journalist Borat or flamboyant gossip reporter Bruno, strutting onstage in a bright green leotard singing “Fat Bottom Girls,” or reenacting key lyrical moments from “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
