GRIDIRON GREATS: The penultimate regular season ballot

Yes, that’s right. We’re only days away from the end of this season’s league play for high school football in Imperial Valley.

For some teams, Friday will mark the last contest until next August. For some players, it will mark the end of their days playing competitive football.

Others will continue on to the CIF playoffs. We expect that group to include each of the players on this week’s Gridiron Greats ballot. Their teams each scored convincing wins in their most recent contests and look to be in pretty good shape for playoff spots headed into the weekend.

This week we’ve selected five candidates. Cast your votes at www.ivpressonline.com/gridirongreats.

The winner will be announced in Friday’s edition of the Imperial Valley Press.

Joey Ramos, Imperial

The junior wide receiver was a major weapon in the Tigers’ 49-7 demolition of Southwest High School last Friday. Ramos caught eight passes, and scored on three of them. He racked up 146 yards on the day.

Nathan Hart, Imperial

Hart was a force on both sides of the ball against Southwest. The senior running back and linebacker had 12 carries for 87 yards and one touchdown, plus four tackles and an interception.

Joseph Tarango, Central Union

The senior wide receiver for the undefeated Spartans had a huge day against Palo Verde last Friday. Tarango caught seven passes for 146 yards and one TD in Central’s 44-6 homecoming victory.

Jose Devoux, Holtville

The sophomore running back was a machine in the Vikings’ 20-0 win over a very good Vincent Memorial team. Devoux ran FORTY-ONE times for 203 yards and two touchdowns in a victory that puts a share of the Manzanita League title within reach.

Jacob Ramirez, Brawley

As players replacing star quarterbacks go, Ramirez is acquitting himself quite well. In last week’s scrum against Calexico, the junior had 71 passing yards, including two TD passes, plus 58 rushing yards on 15 carries, in leading the Wildcats to a 21-0 victory.
