For many years, the city of Brawley has kicked off Cattle Call with their annual Chili Cook-Off. Eleven teams were registered this year to go out and make the best chili they possibly could. But most of all, they get to have some fun and be able to make people happy with their chili.

On Saturday, November 1st, 2014 Brawley had their 29th Annual Chili Cook-Off. Hundreds of people from the community went to taste all different kinds of chili for just $2. In addition to just tasting, chili residents were also able to buy from other vendors and ride a mechanical bull to get in the Cattle Call spirit.

J.J. Galvan was asked by The Roar staff how he and his team prepared for this years annual chili cook-off.

“It took about seven or eight of us guys that get together every year. We chop up our produce and our meat. We have two different types of meat. We have it all packaged so it’s ready for the morning of the chili cook-off, and then we put it all together and cook it up.”

Joel Gonzalez explained how long he and his team have been participating in the chili cook-off.

“We’ve been doing this, well actually I’ve been leading this team, for at least 18-20 years. It’s been a lot of fun. We had a little bit of time off for about 3-4 years, but overall, it is a lot of work.”

Will Gonzalez told us why his team’s chili is the best chili in town.

“Our chili is the best chili in town, because we put all our time and effort into it. We really try to perfect our recipe. We put a lot of heart into it just like we do in our business. We try to take care of people, so we want our chili to be the best for our families just like we do like our business.”

Vivian Rivas states what her secret recipe is and if she feels that her team will win this year’s chili cook-off.

“What my special part is in our recipe is the sirloin tip, I think if you put a little more meat and give people a taste of meat more than just chili, and a little spice to it makes your chili a little better. Do I think were gonna win? Well, I’ve been getting a lot of feedback th

at our chili is probably one of the best if not the best and hopefully we do come out winning.”
