As winter season ends, the smell of fresh grass is in the air.

The Calexico High School baseball team is set with star-studded teams including seniors Carlos Arellano, Luis Gil-Lamadrid, Alejandro Perezchica, David Macias and Miguel Moreno.

Those players have been on the squad since their sophomore year.

This may be a huge year for four-year starter Carlos Arellano. The shortstop has a Division 1 scholarship to the University of New Mexico.

Last year, the Bulldogs came up short of claiming the Imperial Valley League title losing to Brawley Union High School in the clinching game, losing 5-2. The Bulldogs fell short in the CIF-San Diego Section playoffs, losing in the first round to Coronado.

The Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 17-8. The Bulldogs have a special primetime game at San Diego Padres’ Petco Park where they will square off against the Imperial High School in an IVL game this season.

“To go undefeated in IVL and to go deep in CIF,” center-fielder Steven Torres said is the team goal. “It feels great to play with friends in a Major League stadium, it a good way to kick off league against a rival team.”

He also added, “We are the team to beat this year in IVL’s because we feel we are the best nine people to play in the Valley.”
