Calexico teacher accused of sex crimes pleads not guilty

A Calexico teacher arrested Friday following allegations he inappropriately touched several teenage students entered a plea of not guilty in court Tuesday.

Aurora High School teacher Tommy Obeso, 59, appeared at an arraignment hearing in Imperial County Jail Court and faces three counts including arranging and going to meet a minor for sex, sexual battery and sending illicit material to a minor.

Obeso was arrested in a sting operation by Calexico police and Homeland Security Investigation’s cybercrime unit after he agreed to meet a fictitious teenager he communicated with online for sex.

Bail is set at $250,000, deputy Imperial County District Attorney Heather Trapnell said, and Obeso is represented by defense attorney John Breeze.

Breeze requested that extended media coverage not be allowed but the judge overruled his request to allow extended media coverage.

Obeso’s pretrial and bail review is set for Monday in Imperial County Jail Court.
