Blaze forces Marine helicopter to make emergency landing

IMPERIAL — No injuries were reported from an in-flight fire that forced a Marine CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter to make an emergency landing at Imperial County Airport on Thursday.

The incident happened approximately 1 p.m. during a routine training mission. The aircraft, which belongs to the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 465, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, landed safely at the airport while on fire. The Imperial County Fire Department swiftly extinguished the rapidly spreading fire after the aircraft landed.
