NAVAL AIR FACILITY EL CENTRO — Until a person sees it for himself, the spectacular aeronautic jousting the Blue Angels perform stretches the imagination to the surreal. This is Imperial Valley’s midnight sun, only it is at tea time when everyone is wide awake.

For the 49th year the Blue Angels displayed their awesome flying chops in the first show of the season. The mild spring weather was as delightful as the six-man squadron who seemed to defy gravity at will. For one visitor it was a homecoming weekend, Doug Neuberger, a Hemet resident and former Navy lieutenant commander and operations manager who oversaw NAFEC runways between 1976 and 1979.
