CALIPATRIA — Just before marching out to begin their commencement ceremony Wednesday night, an administrator shouted, “Ish, they need you in the front!” to Calipatria High’s Class of 2019, which was preparing for their big moment inside the school’s gym.

While screaming a nickname into a gym full of 87 rowdy teenagers may seem like an dubious way to get locate a certain student, the crowd immediately beckoned Ismael Lopez, who rushed toward the front as if his mother had just called for him.
