EL CENTRO — A Sylmar-based company was recently fined nearly $100,000 for various workplace safety violations that contributed to the October 2018 death of an employee working on the Interstate 8 improvement project.

All told, Security Paving Company was fined for five serious violations totaling $94,500 and two separate general and regulatory violations totaling $1,060 by the state Division of Occupational Health and Safety.

I find it rather peculiar that this private company receives fines for their work related fatality, while IID has a work related fatality just 2 days after this incident and gets absolutely NOTHING. Not even a slap on the wrist! If you look at the reports on OSHA’s website, it shows that IID’s incident happened on 10/26/2018 and the OSHA report was closed on 01/09/2019, whereas this incident happened on 10/24/2018 and the case is still pending.

Also, if you followed all of the news reports previously posted in the press about the incident of the IID accident, it never once mentioned ANYTHING about the employee drowning like this OSHA report does. Once again it just seems bizarre! Plus anyone who know anything about the IID system knows that the Ash Main Canal is knowingly deeper than 4 feet of water. This report makes it seem as the employee was diving in a bath tub of peaceful water.

Let’s all sit back and think of what is going on in the Imperial Valley during October. It’s vegetable season! Vegetable season means a lot of water orders from IID. The Ash Main Canal is a huge distribution canal that feeds 40+ laterals. So please IID explain how during this time of year near the heading of the canal that there is only 4 feet of water in a 6 foot bottom canal. This OSHA reports has bullshit written all over it!

But wait IID, I thought you said the employee died of natural causes? The real question is, who manipulated this report? If you know anything about IID’s dive team you know that it is IID Director Bruce Kuhn and JR Hatfield’s pet project that they would do anything to protect it.

Give it up Bruce and JR! Your dive team always has and always will be considered a joke in the Imperial Valley community, especially in the eyes of the real first responders (which you are NOT)!!

IID let the farmers of Imperial Valley grow hemp and quit trying to act like this mafia control freak agency. You do a fantastic job of making your board and agency look bad!

If it walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, then most likely it is a duck...

At this point though, who is surprised by anything that IID does anymore? Let the farmer's grow some hemp and quit trying to be such a mafia style control freak agency.
