Holtville man seeks out his heroes

Imperial Valley native Christian Herrera poses with former President Jimmy Carter on June 9 at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Ga. COURTESY PHOTO

PLAINS, Ga. — When former President Jimmy Carter was at Maranatha Baptist Church Sunday to give his first Sunday School lesson since breaking his hip in May, it wasn’t a fluke that Holtville resident Christian Herrera happened to be in the congregation.

The 24-year-old college student and part-time Walmart employee said he pursues photo opportunities with contemporary politicians and political giants of the past as a hobby. He said he began doing it to compensate for a failed interaction with Sen. Bernie Sanders in 2015, which was a result of being “awe-stricken.”
