It’s 7:10 a.m. on a Monday as students walk into the band room at Southwest High School. There is a combination of conversations and a mix of sound coming from each instrument. Bang! go the cymbals as they are being pulled out. Clink! goes the cold metal of each instrument as it is assembled.

All goes quiet when the instructor emerges from his office. Students take their seats, maneuvering their instruments to avoid hitting anyone. Then they play.
