Lawmakers on a state commission voted down a proposal to reform Article 8 of the state’s Constitution that would have removed local control of city fire departments.

Assemblyman Juan Manuel Molina, Chairman of the Commission of Government, Legislation and Constitutional Affairs, said the bill introduced by his colleague Claudia Agatón, an Ensenada member of the Workers’ Party, would have transferred city fire departments from the state, turning them into independent agencies whose workers would then get benefits from the Mexican Institute of Social Security instead of the state agency named Issstecali.
