While it can be hard to step back from one's smartphone or tablet, deciding to do so even if just for a night can be a good thing.

Joan Tyler, a licensed marriage and family counselor in El Centro, said putting down the phone and picking up a book or spending time with loved ones can be a positive and healthy experience.
