NILAND – One death was reported Monday in connection to the five-alarm fire that started about 6:30 p.m. Sunday in brush near Orban Road west of Highway 111. The blaze destroyed nearly 30 homes and displaced more than 150 residents as strong winds pushed it eastward.

Firefighters performing mop-up duties about 10:30 a.m. Monday discovered a corpse in an area of brush consumed by the fire, said county fire Chief Alfredo Estrada, Jr.
