CALEXICO — As much as she likes country, hip-hop and other genres of music, Samantha Gutierrez said she also has a special place in her heart for mariachi music. Combine that appreciation with a fondness for volunteering within her community, and one can easily guess why she would aspire to become the 2016 Senorita Mariachi Festival.

“I am really excited to be a part of it this year,” she said.
