Hugo Serrano wasn’t expecting to check his blood sugar level when he visited the Imperial Valley Mall on Friday afternoon. As Serrano sat down with a diabetes prevention aide, he was relieved at receiving a normal blood sugar level of 82.

“I think it’s very important to know about diabetes and your sugar level,” said Serrano. “I do believe diabetes is more common in Hispanics because the community eats a lot of sugar and greasy foods. I’m learning a lot about how to think about certain foods and how to take better care of myself.”
