My summer, deep summer, not to be confused with the deep state, has come to an end. It’s not that each day’s temperature must be an improvement over last Friday’s 110 in the shade, but life has returned to Imperial Valley. Yes. The temps are better. I can keep a bottle of water in my car and it won’t be steaming by 3 p.m. But that’s not all.
On Friday, the El Centro Public Library held an event, Read with a Farmer. The farmer was Tom Brundy, who read “Right This Very Minute: A Table to Farm Book about Food and Farming,” by Lisl H. Detlefsen. This was a national event to inform young people about where their food comes from. Doesn’t it come from Vons? The local program was organized by Farm Smart and other ag groups. From Tom Bodus’ article, “Farmers visited 38 classrooms at schools in Calexico, Holtville, El Centro and Brawley, as well as six public libraries, to read the book.”
