A Calexico police officer shot a medium-sized pit bull that allegedly attempted to attack him at 6:45 a.m. Sunday in the 700 block of Lincoln Street, the Calexico Police Department reported. The dog was subsequently euthanized after being shot once in the head.

Officer Victor Flores responded to a report of a dog-bite victim and was in the process of interviewing the victim when the dog charged Flores, prompting him to shoot the dog, a press release stated.

After being shot, the dog fell to the ground, got up and subsequently returned to its residence across the street from the initial bite victim, the press release stated.

An animal control officer took possession of the injured dog and transported it to the on-call veterinarian where is was euthanized, the press release stated. The owner of the dog was cited. Flores was not injured.
