EL CENTRO - A head-on collision prompted by a wrong-way driver resulted in the death of two women at about 9:40 p.m. Monday on eastbound Interstate 8 just west of Dogwood Road.
The collision was reportedly caused by a Ford Transit van driven by a 75-year-old South Carolina woman that had merged into oncoming I-8 traffic from Highway 115, the California Highway Patrol reported.
CHP officers had attempted to get the attention of the wrong-way driver as she continued driving westbound on the eastbound I-8 but were unsuccessful, the agency reported.
As the van traveled the wrong way in the No. 2 lane of I-8, it collided head on with a Honda Pilot driven by a 30-year-old Calexico woman. The vehicles collided head on and both drivers suffered major head injuries and were pronounced dead on scene, a CHP press release stated.
Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts and driving under the influence does not appear to be a factor in this collision, the CHP reported.
The names of the drivers have been withheld pending notification of family.
