HEBER — An 86-year-old Heber woman who was walking home Saturday died after being struck by a vehicle near Heber Avenue, just north of Main Street, authorities announced.
At approximately 6:18 p.m. Saturday, Carmen Ortiz was reportedly walking in a southwesterly direction to cross Heber Avenue, just north of Main Street (Heber Road/SR-86), from her home to church.
The driver, Concepcion Ahumada, was driving her Honda Accord southbound on Heber Avenue, just north of Main Street, behind Ortiz.
The left front of the Honda collided with the Ortiz.
The 86-year-old was knocked over the hood of the vehicle and then fell to the ground.
Ahumada pulled over to the side of the road to wait for emergency personnel to arrive.
Emergency personnel arrived on scene within minutes and provided medical aid to Ortiz until REACH Air Ambulance arrived on scene, a California Highway Patrol news release stated.
Ortiz was being flown to Desert Regional before being diverted to John F. Kennedy Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased, the Riverside County coroner's office announced.
Alcohol or drugs were not determined to be a factor in the collision.
"The California Highway Patrol would like to remind all pedestrians when crossing the street to look both ways," the CHP news release stated. "Also take a moment before stepping onto the street in traffic to make eye contact assuring that drivers see you."
