EL CENTRO -- A 26-year-old man was arrested at about 6:30 a.m. Monday in connection to the murder of an unidentified individual in the 200 block of North Imperial Avenue, the El Centro Police Department reported.
Officers had initially arrived on scene in response to a report of a physical fight in the parking lot situated between a restaurant and a motel, the department reported.
Responding officers reportedly discovered a male victim lying on the ground bleeding from injuries to the head and neck area, a press release stated.
As an officer rendered aid, a male suspect later identified as Velasquez, exited a nearby motel room allegedly carrying a metal object in his hand and started chasing a witness, ECPD reported.
Velasquez subsequently ignored the officer’s commands and attempted to flee on foot running toward Imperial Avenue. The officer then deployed his police canine Max to subdue Velasquez and take him into custody, ECPD stated.
Emergency medical personnel were summoned to the location to render aid to the unconscious victim, who was transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his wounds, ECPD reported.
No apparent motive has been discovered regarding the attack and no clear relationship, other than having neighboring motel rooms, was established between the victim and Velasquez, the press release stated.
An Imperial County Sheriff’s Office coroner was requested and was in the process of notifying the victim’s next of kin.
Officers and detectives from the Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division continue to investigate the alleged homicide.
Velasquez was also medically treated and released and was booked into county jail on unspecified offenses related to the fatal incident, ECPD reported.
