EL CENTRO — A 22-year-old El Centro man was arrested for alleged drug possession after leading police on a vehicle pursuit Thursday morning, El Centro Police Department announced.
Once the pursuit ended in the 400 block of Driftwood Drive, officers searched the vehicle driven by Lorenzo Bernal Esquivel and reportedly found a significant amount of Cannabis, THC vape cartridges, Xanax bars, fake OxyContin (Fentanyl) pills and other indicating factors associated with the transport and sales of controlled substances.
Esquivel was taken into custody at the scene by ECPD officers and booked into county jail on a $100,000 bail on suspicion of possession or purchasing a controlled substance for sale, transporting or selling a narcotic controlled substance, possession of marijuana or hashish for sale, selling or furnishing marijuana or hashish for sale and refusal to obey an officer, county Sherriff’s Office arrest records stated.
The incident occurred just prior to 2:30 a.m. when an ECPD officer attempted to stop a blue Honda Civic, which was driven by Esquivel, who was accompanied by an unidentified passenger, in the area of Eight Street and Wake Avenue.
According to an ECPD news release, the Civic began swerving about the roadway and ultimately led officers on a pursuit.
Esquivel reportedly continued to evade as he navigated the area. The pursuit ended once Esquivel pulled into the driveway of his residence in the 400 block of Driftwood.
Officers conducted a high-risk stop on the vehicle and were able to safely detain both subjects without further incident.
Esquivel was arrested for the alleged offenses and the passenger was not charged, ECPD Cmdr. Aaron Reel confirmed Thursday.
