Calexico High’s Merry Lee, 16, returns against Poway High during a home game in Calexico on Tuesday.

CALEXICO — The Calexico High girls’ tennis team’s season came to a halt here Tuesday with a 17-1 loss to Poway High in the first round of the CIF-San Diego Section Division I playoffs.

The Bulldogs received the No. 14 ranking in the division and because of their Imperial Valley League title, hosted in the No. 3 Titans (14-5, 6-4).

“We knew we were going to be playing a very good Poway team,” Calexico head coach Xavier Rodriguez said. “I’m really happy with the way the girls played. We stayed aggressive, we stayed smart ... This was a very, very strong Poway team. I can’t be disappointed.”

Calexico finished 10-0 in IVL to claim the league crown, with an overall record of 15-2.

“It was a great season. I’m incredibly proud of my girls from where they were at the beginning of the season ... About half of the girls were picking up a racket for the first time and for them to get to the level where they got, it speaks to their hard work and dedication and where they’re going in life,” Rodriguez said.

While the team season for Calexico is over, it will continue for a few individual players who qualified for the section individuals’ tournament.

The No. 1 doubles team of Alejandra Alonso and Mariel Avila reigns as the IVL individual tournament champion.

“It was another level, but it was a good experience,” said Avila, a 17-year-old senior. “I was very proud of the team — we all came together and we’re really close and that’s what got us the IVL championship.”

Calexico’s singles player Mariel Vizcarra also qualified for the CIF finals.

The tournament is set to start Nov. 11 in San Diego. Look in SCOREBOARD for results from Tuesday’s match.
